LADIES KICKBOXING FITNESS DAYTIME CLASSES **5 WEEK COURSE** - NEXT COURSE DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED SHORTLY!
Due to the great success of our 5 week course for Ladies Kickboxing fitness daytime classes which is currently in progress and is fully booked. The dates for the next course will be announced shortly. Classes will be Instructed by Master Gary Gassor 7th Degree Black Belt in Taekwon-do and Kickboxing.

MR THOMAS SETS NEW GUINNESS WORLD RECORD!!!
A big CONGRATULATIONS to Mr. Thomas for setting the new Guinness World Record of a 26 hour Taekwon-do Patterns Marathon. Mr. Thomas said "I can officially announce that on Wednesday 14th December it was confirmed by the Guinness World records that I have broken the world Taekwon-Do Patterns marathon record. I have now set the record to 26 hours and will be in this years record book when released in September/October. Thank you to everyone who helped me by being a witness or judge. We have made history together!"

BIG CONGRATULATIONS TO MR. GASSOR ON ACHIEVING HIS 2ND DEGREE BLACK BELT IN TAEKWON-DO
A big CONGRATULATIONS and WELL DONE to Mr. Gassor on achieving his 2nd Degree Black Belt in Taekwon-do. Mr. Gassor was graded by Master Nicholls, General Secretary of the ITF and official UK-ITF Examiners on Saturday 29th October in Bristol.

Well done to all of our students who took part in the UK-ITF British Championships in Reading on Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th October. Overall results for the two days: 53 competitors took part in the competition and we won 51 medals, 12 of which were Gold and are new 2011 British Champions!

ITF TAEKWON-DO PRIVATE TUITION FOR OUR INSTRUCTORS
As our members are already aware, Master Gassor has been travelling up to London and Bristol every week to train under the guidance of Master Nicholls, 8th Degree Black Belt and General Secretary of the International Taekwon-do Federation (ITF) alongside Masters from all over the country. Master Nicholls has now kindly agreed to teach Master Gassor, Mrs. Gassor-Jones and Mr. Gassor to have private ITF Taekwon-do lessons in London. The knowledge and training that they receive from this private tuition will help to benefit our students and maintain the high standard of ITF Taekwon-do that we teach at the MAFC and its Satellite Clubs. As well as receiving this private tuition Master Gassor will still be attending weekly classes with Master Nicholls and fellow masters from the ITF.

Master Nicholls has now kindly agreed to teach Master Gassor, Mrs. Gassor-Jones and Mr. Gassor to have private ITF Taekwon-do lessons in London. The knowledge and training that they receive from this private tuition will help to benefit our students and maintain the high standard of ITF Taekwon-do that we teach at the MAFC and its Satellite Clubs. As well as receiving this private tuition Master Gassor will still be attending weekly classes with Master Nicholls and fellow masters from the ITF.

I.M.A.A. INTERCLUB TOURNAMENT - SUNDAY 5TH JUNE, 2011
On Sunday 5th June the International Martial Arts Association I.M.A.A (umbrella name for Gassor’s Taekwon-do and Kickboxing) held their second Interclub Tournament at Duffryn Sport Centre, Duffryn, Newport. The event saw over 100 competitors taking part in the tournament with sparring, patterns, forms and jump kick competition categories taking place throughout the day.
Families and friends came to support the day and 100% of all spectators entrance fees (adults only, as children’s were free of charge) going towards the Gassor’s Tournament Team Fundraising Fund to support their upcoming tournaments with the UK-ITF this year. The I.M.A.A also had a Tombola competition stall which proved very popular and again seen 100% of all proceeds raised going towards the Gassor’s Tournament Team Fundraising Fund.
Mr.Ayrton Mullins and Mr. Connor Sweeting (both 1st Degree Black Belt Belts and members of Gassor’s Tournament Team) gave a demonstration showing competitors and spectators the rules and regulations of the Tournament and demonstrated the ‘points’ system when Sparring. This gave new students an insight into the Tournament and helped to gain experience for the larger UK-ITF Tournaments. All competitors received a medal for entering.
The Tournament had 4 rings operating at all times with Umpires and Officials regulating the Tournament and St.John first aid in attendance. The mood at the Tournament was relaxed and everyone was in good spirits.

GASSOR'S TOURNAMENT TEAM WIN 58 MEDALS AT THE UK-ITF TEAM CHALLENGE ON SUNDAY 22ND MAY, 2011!
A huge Congratulations to Gassor''s Tournament team members who won 58 medals at the UK-ITF Team Challenge on Sunday 22nd May at the Olympiad Leisure Centre, Chippenham, Wiltshire and was hosted by Miss.Kerry Burridge.
74 competitors took part from Gassor''s & came away with an impressive 58 medals!!! Gassor''s came 2nd place in the overall club points too :-)
Mrs Gassor-Jones is very pleased and proud of everyone who took part in the Tournament and would like to thank all members for their effort and hard work. She would also like to thank all Gassor''s members, parents & family members for their continuous support. The tournament was a great success with members gaining a lot of valuable experience for future UK-ITF Tournaments.

Congratulations to Master Gassor, Mrs. Gassor-Jones and Mr. Gassor who successfully completed the British Taekwon-do Council course held on Saturday 12th March. Master Gassor, Mrs. Gassor-Jones and Mr.Gassor are now members of the British Taekwon-do Council (BTC).
On Saturday the 12th of March the British Taekwon-do Council course saw 118 applicants arrive at Mellow Lane Secondary School for what was to be the first showing of the new and improved BTC Registered Instructor Course. This course developed by the BTC and released for 2011 has a vast amount of extra information enabling the candidates to receive a more in-depth knowledge on the vital areas involved in teaching Taekwon-Do to the public.
Seated in round tables of 10 to enable discussion throughout the course, the candidates were taken through the presentation by Mark Skyrme the course verifier. New to the course are the evaluation forms where the candidates are able to supply feedback on the presentation, content and course material provided. The new presentation and packs cover far more reaching aspects of Taekwon-Do instruction and should prove very useful for UK ITF instructors.
With such a huge amount of content to cover the BTC had planned a full day of intense brain training, starting at 10am the course was concluded by 5pm.

SCOTTISH CHAMPIONSHIPS SUCCESS FOR GASSOR'S TOURNAMENT TEAM!!!
On Saturday 26th March, Senior Coach Mrs. Leanne Gassor-Jones met with 23 people at The Martial Arts and Fitness Centre to make their way to Bristol Airport. The 11 competitors representing Gassor’s Tournament Team were already feeling excited and were looking forward to their journey to compete in the Scottish Championships in Mortherwell, Scotland.
After checking in at Bristol Airport Team members had a bit of fun in the duty-free shops and the boys were very happy to proudly pose for the camera in items from Claire’s accessories!! After a few giggles and a safe and pleasant flight, Team members landed in Glasgow airport and made their way to the Premier Inn, Motherwell.
On route to the hotel Mrs.Gassor-Jones suggested going to the local theme park Strathclyde…….so, after speaking nicely to the driver they quickly dropped their bags off at the hotel and made their way for a fun packed afternoon at Strathclyde where they went on rollercoasters, water rides etc. Surely the adrenaline pumping through their bodies would add to the excitement for the Tournament the following day. After a few healthy snacks (does candyfloss, Icecreams, Sweets and Chocolates count?) the team made their way back to the hotel.
Mrs. Gassor-Jones organised for the team to have a meal together at the Newhouse restaurant next door to the Hotel and the team were treated to meals from the Gassor’s Tournament Team fundraising fund. The team then made their way back to their rooms about 10pm for a good nights sleep as it was going to be an early start ready for the Scottish Championships in the morning.
The team met for breakfast at 8am. They were then picked up from the Hotel and travelled by coach to the Scottish Championships held at the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility, Motherwell. On arrival the team were very impressed with the modern newly built venue.
The team really enjoyed the well organised day and came away with the following medal results:

MASTER NICHOLLS, MASTER GASSOR & MASTER CREEDON ATTEND IITF (IRISH INTERNATIONAL TAEKWON-DO FEDERATION) SEMINAR & BLACK BELT GRADING IN WEXFORD, IRELAND
Master Nicholls and Master Gassor have just returned from a very successful and enjoyable weekend at Wexford, Ireland.
The Seminar took place on Friday 25th March followed by a Chinese meal with IITF Instructors Mr. Mick Flaherty V Degree Black Belt and Miss.Bernadette Doyle 3rd Degree Black Belt and IITF students.

IITF BLACK BELT GRADING - SATURDAY 26TH MARCH. WEXFORD, IRELAND.
On Saturday 26th March, Master Nicholls conducted a Black Belt Grading for the students. Master Gassor said "I would like to personally thank Mr.Flaherty, Miss. Doyle and all the students from IITF for their hospitality and for a great weekend."

I.M.A.A INTERCLUB TOURNAMENT - SUNDAY 13TH FEBRUARY
On Sunday 13th February, Mrs. Gassor-Jones, 4th Degree Black Belt held the first International Martial Arts Association (I.M.A.A) Interclub Tournament of the year at Duffryn Sports Centre, Newport. The I.M.A.A is the umbrella name for Gassor’s ITF Taekwon-do and Taekem-Kwan Kickboxing Schools headed by Master Gary Gassor, 7th Degree Black Belt.
130 Competitors took part during the day with competitors from Gassor’s Taekwon-do and Taekem-kwan Kickboxing. The Tournament was well supported with Spectators and help from our Officials and St.John’s Ambulance.
For some students this was their first Tournament and a chance to gain experience for the larger Tournaments planned for later this year. The Tournament attracted students from as young as 4 years old who train in ‘Little Dragons’ Taekwon-do right the way through to Adults and all competitors received a medal for entering.
Mr. Ayrton Mullins and Mr. Connor Sweeting both 1st Degree Black Belts, demonstrated the Tournament rules and how to score points for the sparring competition with various kicking and punching techniques. The parents and students found this demonstration very interesting and the illegal techniques very humorous. The demonstration gave the students and parents/spectators a better insight into the Tournament rules.
The Tournament started at 10am with ITF Patterns from White Belt to the higher Dan Grade patterns which proceeded with students taking part in the Jump Kick Competition, which proved very popular especially with the Juniors. Later in the afternoon the Tournament moved on to Sparring with students competing in both Taekwon-do and Kickboxing.
After each category, Master Gary Gassor, 7th Degree Black Belt presented the well earned medals to the students and photos were taken by the I.M.A.A Official Photographer, Mr. Dino Dash.
Master Gassor said ‘I am really happy with how successful today went with our fighters from both Taekwon-do and Kickboxing doing well. Well done to everyone who took part! Proceeds raised from the Tournament will go towards helping our Gassor’s Taekwon-do Tournament Team, which already has a very busy year ahead of them with upcoming UK-ITF Tournaments’.
Mrs. Gassor-Jones said ‘I would like to thank the officials for all their help and hard work and for making the Tournament a great success. I would also like to thank the students and parents for their continuous support and look forward to the Tournaments we have planned this year’.
Due to the success of the Tournament we will be holding another Two I.M.A.A Interclub Tournaments at Duffryn Sports Centre, Newport on Sunday 5th June and Sunday 6th November, 2011.
Gassor’s Taekwon-do Tournament Team are now preparing for the UK-ITF Welsh Championships on Sunday 27th February hosted by Master Ian Lawes at Penarth Leisure Centre, Penarth. JUDO INSTRUCTOR SENSEI STEVE MORGAN IS AWARDED BY NAKMAS FOR HIS EXCELLENT CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE MAINDEE JUDO CLUB
Sensei, Steve Morgan (3rd Dan) has done and still does an incredible job at Maindee Judo Club. The club has been running for almost 13 years and has now gone from strength to strength having become full affiliate members of NAKMAS in 2008. The club is also accredited with the NAKMAS safe kids campaign teaching from age 7 with no upper age limit. The Dojo is within the Martial Arts and Fitness Centre, Newport, South Wales.
Steve has been practicing Judo since 1980 and has been an instructor since 1998. There are 23 seniors and 19 juniors who are now members of MJC and train on a Monday and Friday night with regular numbers of 20 plus per session. A stark contrast from several years ago where there might have only been between 3 and 5 students on the mat at any one time. Steve’s perseverance and love of Judo has made the club what it is today. With a total of 4 recently graded Junior Black Belts and 8 regular Senior Black Belts now on the mat it is testament to his ethics. He is an inspiration to everyone who has come to train either at Maindee or Duffryn Judo Club which his son Gareth Morgan (2nd Dan) opened approximately 2 Years ago in association with Maindee Judo Club.
Maindee Judo Club is not just for self defence, at MJC you become part of “a family” where everyone has the same goal, to train in a safe and friendly environment. Everyone who has joined the club has become a friend, yes we still fight and are very competitive within the club as Judo is a Martial Art, but Steve’s aim is to teach traditional Kodokan Judo as a fundamental principal. This year Maindee Judo club has taken part in two competitions which saw them come away with 90% of the medals.
When Steve is not on the mat he has to play the role of secretary, administrator and general organiser. As the club is non profit making Steve’s position is purely voluntary, which can sometimes mean many evenings tied up with logistics and planning for events, theory question papers and classes. He has become a role model for everyone at MJC and is admired by all the parents who bring their children to class.
At the annual Christmas party / presentation evening all students who recently graded were presented with their belts and NAKMAS certificates. In addition to this Steve prepared certificates and plaques for what has now become “Sensei’s award”. The idea came from Steve that all senior Black Belts should nominate one student of their choice for an award for whatever reason they choose. Along with this he produced certificates for good attendance, most improved students and showing Judo spirit, plus the coveted title of Judoka of the year. No one gets left out which makes it a pleasure to be involved with. However Steve’s commitment and dedication to Maindee Judo Club has gone relatively unnoticed until now. So it was with great pleasure that Rob Williams presented Steve with a framed certificate from NAKMAS on behalf of all past and present Judoka of MJC which read:
The NAKMAS National Governing Body recognises that Steve Morgan 3rd Dan has made excellent contributions to the Maindee Judo Club which is formally recognised by the NAKMAS National Governing Body
Steve was delighted to receive such an award and was almost lost for words.

MASTER GASSOR'S INTERNATIONAL MASTERS PRESENTATION
Congratulations to Master Gary Gassor who was presented with his 7th Degree ITF Masters Black Belt Certificate at the recent ITF British Championships. The certificate was presented by Master Trevor Nicholls, 8th Degree Black Belt and General Secretary of the International Taekwon-do Federation, in the presence of ITF masters and over 600 people.

Congratulations to all MAFC Students who attended the Scottish Open Championships on Sunday 28th March, 2010. We are pleased to announce we have 2 new Scottish Champions and came away with 8 medals:

LONDON OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS 2008
CONGRATULATIONS to all those that attended the London Open Championships on Sunday 13th July! We are very pleased to say we came away with 29 Medals so well done everyone!
We would like to thank all students, parents and families for their support at the Tournament in London. We hope you all had a great day!
