22 MEDALS & 3RD PLACE OVERALL FOR GASSOR'S TOURNAMENT TEAM AT THE BARCELONA CHALLENGER CUP 2014!!!

After months of planning and excitement, 50 students and family members, including Gassor’s Taekwon-Do Wales Senior Instructor/Coach Mrs Leanne Gassor-Jones, were eager and ready to attend the Barcelona Challenger Cup in Sitges, Barcelona, Spain. The day had finally arrived and on Friday 14th November everyone met at the club’s head office, the Martial Arts and Fitness Centre (MAFC) in Newport, South Wales, ready to board the coach to Bristol airport. After everyone was given their information packs, weekend itinerary’s and boarding passes on the coach, Mrs Gassor-Jones went through all the information and gave a few surprise treats: Euros for everyone to enjoy a meal together, free travel games for all team members, a free raffle of chocolates and sweets for everyone, a free word search with prizes for different age groups, a free game of bingo with 5 travel games and 50 Euros as prizes, and mints and toffees for on the plane! The coach journey to the airport flew by, and before we knew it, we were at the airport!

After a smooth check-in at the airport, we all travelled from Bristol to Barcelona and arrived Friday evening. After our coach transfer to the hotel, everyone was given their rooms and everyone was really pleased with their hotel rooms, facilities and great location, which was in the Port area of Sitges, approximately 30 minutes from the centre of Barcelona. Everyone then had a few hours free time, before calling it a night to get some sleep ready for the tournament the next day.

The tournament day (Saturday 15th November) finally arrived and everyone from Gassor’s was ready for action! On the way to the tournament there were a mixture of emotions of nerves and excitement. We all arrived at the venue and the tournament quickly filled with students and suporters from many different countries. The tournament started with the Black Belt categories and all five of our Black Belt team members did really well in their respective categories with most winning medals or placing just outside the medals. After the Black Belts had finished their categories it was the colour belts turn. All of our colour belt team members did really well with a number of Gold, Silver and Bronze medals being won. The tournament ended with a medal presentation to all of the students who won medals, with them standing on podiums and having plenty of photos taken!

All 24 team members did fantastic and everyone had a really great day. The tournament was a great opportunity for team members to gain experience by competing against different countries with different abilities and fighting styles. Gassor’s team won a brilliant 22 medals in total....7 Gold medals, 8 Silver medals and 7 Bronze medals! Gassor’s Taekwon-Do Wales also came 3rd club overall and Mrs Gassor-Jones was really pleased with how well each team member performed and supported each other. Special mentions for the day definitely go to Owen Powell for his ‘technique of the day’ - a brilliant controlled Spinning Hook Kick to the head! And Georgia Southway whose Sparring performances can only be described as ‘Perfection!’

We are very proud of all 24 team members who took part, and the medal results were:

Gold Medals:
Caitlin Nail – Sparring
Ellis Murphy – Sparring
Georgia Southway – Sparring
Jamie Yung – Sparring
Kai Stewart – Sparring
Liam Rossiter – Sparring
Matiss Jekalis – Sparring

Silver Medals:
Courtney Kyte – Sparring
David Perry – Sparring
Emilio Thacker – Sparring
Lexie Smith – Sparring

Owen Powell – Sparring & Patterns
Tomos Sharwood – Sparring

Bronze Medals:
Arron Rose – Sparring
Ethan Kyte – Sparring
Jake Rogers – Sparring
Kian Luton – Sparring & Patterns
Robert Howell – Sparring
Sam Chand – Sparring

A big ‘WELL DONE’ also goes to Craig Radford, Gwyn Blackmore, Harri Radford, Myles Bassage-Morgan and Owen Carter, who also all gave brilliant performances.

After the tournament, Mrs Gassor-Jones arranged for everyone to have a lovely celebratory meal together, and after the meal many of Gassor’s partied away in a few of the bars and clubs in the fantastic Port area. Plenty of fun and great memories were had by all! 

To make the most of our trip and time in Barcelona, on the Sunday, Mrs Gassor-Jones organised for us to have our own coach tour of Barcelona together. In the morning we all went to Barcelona Football Club’s Camp Nou Stadium, followed by a trip to Barceloneta beach for lunch and a look around. After lunch, we had a tour of the city with an English speaking tour guide. We visited many places including: Montjuïc, Mirador de l'Alcalde, Sagrada Familia and Casa Batlló. Everyone had a brilliant day and it was made all the better with the lovely sunny weather too. In the evening everyone had a great time back at the Port, with some of the younger team members relaxing and having fun in the hotel pool and Jacuzzi’s, and some having another night of partying!

On the Monday, it was time for us to make our way back home. Many students and family members said they could have easily stayed longer and many requests were made for a return trip back!

Mrs Gassor-Jones would like to thank everyone who made such a big effort to attend the trip. We are really grateful for the continuous hard work, commitment, effort and support shown by team members and their families... thank you. Thank you for your expenditure for the trip too.

Mrs Gassor-Jones and everyone from Gassor’s would also like to give a big THANK YOU to Mr Sharwood and Mr Rose for helping with the coaching at the tournament. We really appreciate the time, effort, dedication and enthusiasm they both always put in.

A final thank you goes to the UK ITF for the invitation to this International tournament and Master Perez for hosting a great tournament.

Everyone from Gassor’s had an amazing weekend!

GASSOR'S TOURNAMENT TEAM WIN 23 MEDALS AT THE IRISH KUP CUP 2013!!!

On Friday 20th September Master Gary Gassor along with his wife Kay and their daughter Senior Instructor Mrs Leanne Gassor-Jones and 40 members from Gassor's Taekwon-Do Wales (18 competitors & 22 supporters) travelled to Wexford, Ireland ready to compete in the Irish Kup Cup 2013 on Saturday 21st September.

Everyone from Gassor’s travelled together on a coach Friday morning from the club's head office (the Martial Arts & Fitness Centre (MAFC), Newport) to Fishguard ferry port. Mrs Gassor-Jones gave everyone an itinerary with plans to make the most of everyone's time in Wexford, and then kept everyone entertained on the 3 hour coach journey with goody bags, a couple of games of bingo, a word search, a Taekwon-Do quiz, some riddles, a raffle, a general knowledge quiz for children and one for the adults! The entertainment helped the coach journey go very quickly and before we all knew it we were on the ferry to Ireland!  After the 3 and a half hour ferry journey we arrived at Rosslare ferry port and made our way to the hotel while watching the classic film ‘Cool Runnings’ on the coach on the way! When we arrived at the hotel everyone had a quick freshen up and made their way for a group meal. Everyone had a great time at the group meal and it was great for everyone to spend some quality time together. The host of the Irish Kup Cup, Mr Mick Flaherty, kindly popped into the hotel to see Master Gassor, Kay & Mrs Gasor-Jones and checked that everyone was ok. Everyone then had a fairly early night ready for the day ahead.

On the day of the tournament (Saturday 21st September) everyone met for a delicious buffet breakfast and then all made our way to the tournament by shuttle buses. Everyone at the tournament was welcoming and appreciated Gassor’s returning to the competition for our 3rd year running, but we could also see that the Irish I.T.F were eager to win their Irish Kup Cup back that we had won from them in 2012!

The tournament under the guidance of Master Nicholls went really well and everyone from Gassor’s had a great day. The medal tally for Gassor's 18 competitors was 23 medals (9 Gold, 7 Silver & 7 Bronze) and Gassor’s came second overall, with the hosts Irish I.T.F winning the Irish Kup Cup back.

Gassor’s medal results were:

Kay was very enthusiastic with her support and advice to students and had everyone in fits of laughter all weekend!

The ‘Gassor’ family would like to say a big THANK YOU to Mr Mick Flaherty for hosting a great tournament, and would also like to say a massive THANK YOU to all Gassor's students and supporters for attending the tournament. GASSOR'S WIN 26 MEDALS AND COME TOP CLUB OVERALL AT THE IRISH KUP CUP TOURNAMENT!!!

Picture
Gassor's Taekwon-do Wales win the Irish Kup Cup 2012 & 26 medals!!!

On Friday 14th September Senior Instructor Mrs Leanne Gassor-Jones and 48 members from Gassor's Taekwon-do Wales (23 competitors & 25 supporters) travelled to Wexford, Ireland ready to compete in the Irish Kup Cup 2012 on Saturday 15th September.

The day started with everyone travelling together on a coach from the club's head office (the Martial Arts & Fitness Centre, Newport) to Rosslare ferry port. Mrs Gassor-Jones gave everyone an itinerary with plans to make the most of everyone's time in Wexford, and then kept everyone entertained with goody bags, a word search, a Taekwon-do quiz, a raffle, dvd's to watch and even a game of bingo! The entertainment helped the 3 hour journey fly by and before we knew it we were all on the ferry to Rosslare! After the 3 and a half hour ferry journey, the club were kindly met by Miss Bernie Doyle and followed her to the hotel. After a quick check-in and freshen up everyone made their way for a group meal at the hotel. The meal was delightful and was a nice chance for everyone to spend more time together. Everyone was now really looking forward to the tournament the following day.

On the day of the tournament (Saturday 15th September) everyone met for a hearty breakfast and then made our way to the tournament. Everyone at the tournament was very welcoming and after a Coach and Umpire meeting with the guidance of Master Nicholls the tournament started. Our youngest Gassor's member competing on the day, 6 year old Kian Luton, was first up for Patterns and made everyone proud by winning the Gold! Sam Pupic later followed Kian with another Gold in Patterns, along with 2 bronze medals in Patterns for Morgan Thomas and Tomos Sharwood. All 11 students who competed in Patterns did really well and were all really looking forward to the Sparring. Kian Luton was again first on for the Sparring and again thrilled everyone with another Gold! This inspired everyone from Gassor's to do well and Gassor's went on to win a further 8 Gold medals in Sparring! The results for Sparring were: 9 Gold medals, 5 Silver medals and 5 Bronze medals. Gassor's members were really pleased with their medal tally of 23 medals, but were hoping to add to the tally with the Special Technique categories for Jumping High Kick and Destruction still to go.

Martin Bebell made sure the medal tally increased by winning Gold in the destruction and then Gassor's won 2 out of the 3 Jumping High Kick categories with James Shaw and Jordan Casey both winning Gold! Mr Flaherty then announced that there was a tie for the Irish Kup Cup 2012 between Irish I.T.F and Gassor's! After a meeting it was decided that there would be a play-off between the 2 clubs in the Jumping High Kick Special Technique. James Shaw was picked to represent Gassor's against a student called Liam from the Irish I.T.F. After a nail biting and emotional play-off James Shaw won it for Gassor's and Gassor's won the Irish Kup Cup! Master Nicholls presented Mrs Gassor-Jones with the Cup and Mrs Gassor-Jones praised Liam from the Irish I.T.F for his effort and everyone gave him a big cheer. Everyone from Gassor's were really impressed with the strength and courage Liam showed and thought that he represented the Irish I.T.F brilliantly... well done Liam! Everyone from Gassor's were all extremely pleased and proud of James Shaw for such a tremendous effort and want to thank him again for his major part in winning the Cup for Gassor's!

The final medal tally for Gassor's Taekwon-do Wales was 26 medals (14 Gold, 5 Silver & 7 Bronze) & the Irish Kup Cup 2012!

On Sunday 5th June the International Martial Arts Association I.M.A.A (umbrella name for Gassor’s Taekwon-do and Kickboxing) held their second Interclub Tournament at Duffryn Sport Centre, Duffryn, Newport.  The event saw over 100 competitors taking part in the tournament with sparring, patterns, forms and jump kick competition categories taking place throughout the day.

Mr.Ayrton Mullins and Mr. Connor Sweeting (both 1st Degree Black Belt Belts and members of Gassor’s Tournament Team) gave a demonstration showing competitors and spectators the rules and regulations of the Tournament and demonstrated the ‘points’ system when Sparring.  This gave new students an insight into the Tournament and helped to gain experience for the larger UK-ITF Tournaments.   All competitors received a medal for entering.

The Tournament had 4 rings operating at all times with Umpires and Officials regulating the Tournament and St.John first aid in attendance.  The mood at the Tournament was relaxed and everyone was in good spirits.

SCOTTISH CHAMPIONSHIPS SUCCESS FOR GASSOR'S TOURNAMENT TEAM!!!

On Saturday 26th March, Senior Coach Mrs. Leanne Gassor-Jones met with 23 people at The Martial Arts and Fitness Centre to make their way to Bristol Airport.  The 11 competitors representing Gassor’s Tournament Team were already feeling excited and were looking forward to their journey to compete in the Scottish Championships in Mortherwell, Scotland.

After checking in at Bristol Airport Team members had a bit of fun in the duty-free shops and the boys were very happy to proudly pose for the camera in items from Claire’s accessories!! After a few giggles and a safe and pleasant flight, Team members landed in Glasgow airport and made their way to the Premier Inn, Motherwell.

On route to the hotel Mrs.Gassor-Jones suggested going to the local theme park Strathclyde…….so, after speaking nicely to the driver they quickly dropped their bags off at the hotel and made their way for a fun packed afternoon at Strathclyde where they went on rollercoasters, water rides etc.  Surely the adrenaline pumping through their bodies would add to the excitement for the Tournament the following day.  After a few healthy snacks (does candyfloss, Icecreams, Sweets and Chocolates count?) the team made their way back to the hotel.

Mrs. Gassor-Jones organised for the team to have a meal together at the Newhouse restaurant next door to the Hotel and the team were treated to meals from the Gassor’s Tournament Team fundraising fund.  The team then made their way back to their rooms about 10pm for a good nights sleep as it was going to be an early start ready for the Scottish Championships in the morning.

The team met for breakfast at 8am.  They were then picked up from the Hotel and travelled by coach to the Scottish Championships held at the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility, Motherwell.   On arrival the team were very impressed with the modern newly built venue.

The team really enjoyed the well organised day and came away with the following medal results:

SPARRING:
Talisha Samules - Gold (Scottish Champion)
Liam Rossiter - Gold (Scottish Champion)
Taylor Baldwin - Gold (Scottish Champion)
Samuel Taylor - Silver

Luke Fernandes - Bronze

PATTERNS:
Talisha Samules - Silver
Tony Fernandes - Silver
Ayrton Mullins - Silver
Ethan Seivwright - Bronze

SPECIAL TECHNIQUE:

I.M.A.A INTERCLUB TOURNAMENT - SUNDAY 13TH FEBRUARY

Picture
On Sunday 13th February, Mrs. Gassor-Jones, 4th Degree Black Belt held the first International Martial Arts Association (I.M.A.A) Interclub Tournament of the year at Duffryn Sports Centre, Newport.   The I.M.A.A is the umbrella name for Gassor’s ITF Taekwon-do and Taekem-Kwan Kickboxing Schools headed by Master Gary Gassor, 7th Degree Black Belt.

130 Competitors took part during the day with competitors from Gassor’s Taekwon-do and Taekem-kwan Kickboxing.  The Tournament was well supported with Spectators and help from our Officials and St.John’s Ambulance.

For some students this was their first Tournament and a chance to gain experience for the larger Tournaments planned for later this year.  The Tournament attracted students from as young as 4 years old who train in ‘Little Dragons’ Taekwon-do right the way through to Adults and all competitors received a medal for entering.

Mr. Ayrton Mullins and Mr. Connor Sweeting both 1st Degree Black Belts, demonstrated the Tournament rules and how to score points for the sparring competition with various kicking and punching techniques.  The parents and students found this demonstration very interesting and the illegal techniques very humorous.   The demonstration gave the students and parents/spectators a better insight into the Tournament rules.

The Tournament started at 10am with ITF Patterns from White Belt to the higher Dan Grade patterns which proceeded with students taking part in the Jump Kick Competition, which proved very popular especially with the Juniors.  Later in the afternoon the Tournament moved on to Sparring with students competing in both Taekwon-do and Kickboxing.

After each category, Master Gary Gassor, 7th Degree Black Belt presented the well earned medals to the students and photos were taken by the I.M.A.A Official Photographer, Mr. Dino Dash.

Master Gassor said ‘I am really happy with how successful today went with our fighters from both Taekwon-do and Kickboxing doing well.  Well done to everyone who took part! Proceeds raised from the Tournament will go towards helping our Gassor’s Taekwon-do Tournament Team, which already has a very busy year ahead of them with upcoming UK-ITF Tournaments’.

Mrs. Gassor-Jones said ‘I would like to thank the officials for all their help and hard work and for making the Tournament a great success.  I would also like to thank the students and parents for their continuous support and look forward to the Tournaments we have planned this year’.

Due to the success of the Tournament we will be holding another Two I.M.A.A Interclub Tournaments at Duffryn Sports Centre, Newport on Sunday 5th June and Sunday 6th November, 2011.

Gassor’s Taekwon-do Tournament Team are now preparing for the UK-ITF Welsh Championships on Sunday 27th February hosted by Master Ian Lawes at Penarth Leisure Centre, Penarth.  Gassor''s Taekwon-do Tournament Team have 51 competitors entering the Tournament and are really looking forward to taking part on the day.
